Ian Bakala Appointed Caps United Head Coach

Bakala’s Swift Rise: From Assistant to Head Coach at Caps United in Four Days

In what fans are calling the fastest promotion in football, Ian Bakala has been confirmed as the new head coach of Caps United, just four days after being unveiled as the club’s assistant coach.

The 45-year-old former Zambia international midfielder signed a three-year deal with the Zimbabwean Premier Soccer League side, returning to the club where he once played in the mid-2000s.

“Kepekepe Bhora fans are calling it a record—one of the fastest transitions from assistant to head coach in modern football,” local media noted.

Return to Familiar Territory

This marks Bakala’s second stint at Caps United, having previously worn the club’s green and white as a player during his playing days in the 2000s. His appointment comes at a critical time as the Harare giants aim to rebuild and challenge for silverware.

Bakala replaces Lloyd Chitembwe, who parted ways with the club following a string of poor results.

CAF U17 AFCON & World Cup Success

Before returning to club football, Bakala made headlines on the international stage with the Zambia U-17 national team, leading the Young Chipolopolo to the quarterfinals of the CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

That run secured Zambia’s qualification to the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar, scheduled for later this year.

“He showed tactical maturity and calmness during the U-17 AFCON, helping Zambia secure a historic World Cup qualification,” noted Zambian FA officials.

Mixed Fortunes in Club Management

Despite his recent national team success, Bakala has experienced mixed results at club level. He was sacked earlier this season by Nkana FC after a disappointing start. He then had a short-lived stint at Forest Rangers, leaving just before the AFCON U17 tournament.

Forest Rangers were later relegated from the MTN Super League, further underlining the need for stronger leadership during their campaign.

Now back in Zimbabwe, Bakala has the opportunity to reset his club management record and prove his abilities at a higher level.

What Next for Bakala and Caps United?

As Caps United look to bounce back in the Zimbabwean Premier Soccer League, all eyes will be on Bakala’s first few games in charge. With his youth development experience, he is expected to bring energy and tactical depth to a side that has underperformed in recent seasons.

His quick appointment also suggests the Caps United hierarchy sees him as a long-term solution capable of building a sustainable football project.
