Ghana Fails to Qualify for AFCON for the First Time Since 2004
Ghana’s Black Stars will not feature in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time since 2004, following a disappointing 1-1 draw against Angola. Heading into the match, Ghana needed a win to keep their qualification hopes alive but fell short despite a promising start. Jordan Ayew’s stunning 18th-minute free kick gave the visitors the lead, offering a glimmer of hope. However, Angola responded with resilience, leveling the score in the 64th minute through Zini.
The match showcased missed opportunities, most notably a penalty save by Ghanaian goalkeeper Abdul Manaf Nurudeen to deny Angola’s M’Bala Nzola. However, Ghana struggled to capitalize on their lead and was ultimately outplayed in the second half. The draw left the Black Stars at the bottom of Group F, with only three points from five games—a stark contrast to their illustrious history in the tournament.
Earlier, Niger’s 4-0 win over Sudan had temporarily opened a path for Ghana to advance, but their inability to secure critical wins sealed their fate. Ghana’s struggles in this qualifying campaign highlight deeper issues that the team must address ahead of future competitions. Their reliance on results elsewhere and failure to dominate matches underscored a lack of cohesion.
With this result, Ghana’s hopes of appearing in Morocco 2025 have ended. The failure to qualify is a significant blow to the team and fans, given their proud AFCON legacy. The focus now shifts to rebuilding and evaluating strategies for stronger future performances.
This marks a turning point for Ghanaian football as they regroup to reclaim their place among Africa’s elite teams. The final match against Niger on Monday will serve as an opportunity to reflect on the campaign and build toward recovery.
