Zambian international defender becomes free agent after two seasons in Scotland
Ayr, Scotland – Zambian international Frankie Musonda will officially leave Ayr United FC at the end of the 2024–25 Scottish Championship season, the club has confirmed. The 27-year-old defender’s contract expires in June, and he will become a free agent heading into the upcoming June transfer window.
Musonda, who joined Ayr United in June 2022 from Raith Rovers, signed a one-year extension last season. However, his current campaign was hampered by persistent injuries, limiting his contribution during a year when Ayr United fought hard but ultimately fell short of promotion to the Scottish Premiership.

A Frustrating Season Marred by Injuries
Musonda featured in only 16 matches during the 2024–25 season, starting just 11 times and contributing one assist. Recurring injuries kept him sidelined for several crucial games, including Zambia’s 5–0 international friendly loss to Russia last month—a match where his experience was sorely missed in the back line.
His absence was deeply felt by both club and country. For Zambia, Musonda had become a reliable defensive presence since making his national team debut in 2022. At Ayr United, he brought consistency and maturity to the defence when fit, despite the club falling short in their promotion campaign.
A Career-High 71 Appearances for Ayr United
Despite a challenging final year, Musonda will leave Ayr United with 71 appearances across all competitions—more than at any other club in his career. During his two-year spell, he scored five goals and delivered three assists, establishing himself as a fan favourite at Somerset Park.
His contribution in the 2022–23 campaign was especially significant, helping Ayr United reach the Scottish Championship play-offs, and his leadership both on and off the pitch drew praise from fans and coaches alike.
What’s Next for Frankie Musonda?
As his contract winds down, Musonda is expected to explore options across the UK and possibly in other European leagues. While there’s been no official word on his next move, the June transfer window presents an opportunity for the defender to reignite his career after an injury-disrupted year.
Whether he returns to the Scottish game, moves south of the border, or looks abroad, clubs will likely value his versatility, experience, and international pedigree.
