FIFA Awards Lesotho 3–0 Win After South Africa Field Ineligible Player

FIFA Awards Lesotho 3–0 Win After South Africa Field Ineligible Player

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has handed down a major ruling that could reshape Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, sanctioning the South African Football Association (SAFA) for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in their match against Lesotho on 21 March 2025.

FIFA confirmed that South Africa’s actions breached Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and Article 14 of the 2026 World Cup Preliminary Competition Regulations, resulting in a 3–0 forfeiture in favour of Lesotho.

In addition to losing the match, SAFA has been fined CHF 10,000, while Mokoena received a formal warning. The parties have 10 days to request a motivated decision, after which they may appeal to the FIFA Appeal Committee, although the match result stands unless overturned.

How the Ruling Affects Group C Standings

The ruling throws Group C wide open. South Africa, previously clear at the top, now drop to 14 points — level with Benin, while Nigeria and Rwanda follow on 11, Lesotho rise to 9, and Zimbabwe remain on 4 points.

It’s now do-or-die for Bafana Bafana, who must win their last two games against Zimbabwe (10 October) and Rwanda (14 October) to stay in contention for the group’s sole automatic qualification spot.

Meanwhile, Lesotho’s unexpected lifeline reignites their hopes of finishing in the top positions — a remarkable turn for a team traditionally seen as underdogs.

What’s Next?

All eyes now turn to SAFA’s response, with questions being asked over how such an administrative oversight occurred at this level. The decision also sends a clear warning to all federations: discipline and compliance off the pitch are just as important as performance on it.
