CAF Sanctions FAZ Over Fans’ Misconduct During Sierra Leone Match
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed sanctions on the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) following security breaches and pitch invasions during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group G qualifier between the Chipolopolo and Leone Stars on September 10, 2024.
FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga confirmed that Zambia has been fined $20,000 for the incidents, with $10,000 suspended pending a clean record over the next 12 months.
Details of the Sanction
The CAF Disciplinary Board cited Zambia for failure to maintain adequate security measures, leading to the pitch invasion during the crucial qualifier match in Lusaka. Kamanga, quoting correspondence from CAF, stated:
“CAF Disciplinary Board decides: To impose on the Football Association of Zambia a fine of USD 20,000 for pitch invasion and failure to maintain adequate security measures during the match. USD 10,000 of the aforementioned fine is suspended provided that the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) is not found guilty of a similar incident for a period of twelve (12) months.”
Should FAZ commit a similar infraction within this timeframe, the suspended fine will be automatically reinstated, along with any additional sanctions CAF may impose. FAZ has been given 60 days to settle the non-suspended portion of the fine.
Call for Better Conduct in 2025
Kamanga appealed to fans to exhibit better behavior in the upcoming year, emphasizing the potential consequences of repeated infractions.
“We have repeatedly warned fans to desist from throwing missiles on the pitch or invade the pitch during matches either in protest or celebration. The sanctions can be as high as being banned from playing matches at home,” Kamanga said.
He urged fans to create a safer environment at stadiums, making them more welcoming for families and other supporters.
Implications of Misconduct
Pitch invasions and security lapses not only tarnish Zambia’s image in African football but also jeopardize the national team’s ability to host key matches. A continued pattern of misconduct could result in stricter penalties, including bans from hosting home games.
Conclusion
As the Chipolopolo eye a successful campaign in 2025, FAZ is calling on fans to prioritize responsible behavior. The association’s commitment to maintaining order at football matches will be critical in avoiding further sanctions and preserving Zambia’s reputation on the international stage.
