FAZ to Equip Super League Clubs with GPS Technology

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has announced a major development aimed at enhancing the performance and monitoring of players in the MTN Super League. Starting soon, FAZ will distribute Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment to all 18 Super League clubs, a move facilitated through support from FIFA. This initiative marks a significant step toward integrating advanced sports science and technology into Zambian football.

GPS Technology: What It Brings to Zambian Football

The GPS devices, worn by players during training and matches, track a wide range of performance metrics, including movement patterns, speed, distance covered, and physical exertion levels. Such systems allow clubs to analyze data for:

  1. Performance Monitoring: Coaches can identify individual and team strengths and areas for improvement.
  2. Tactical Analysis: Detailed positional tracking helps refine team strategies during matches.
  3. Injury Prevention: By monitoring physical workload, teams can minimize the risk of overtraining and injuries.
  4. Player Development: GPS data supports tailored training programs for skill and fitness improvements.
  5. Team Bonding: Sharing performance insights fosters a collaborative environment, boosting overall morale and competitiveness.

FAZ president Andrew Kamanga expressed confidence in the transformative potential of the initiative. Writing in his weekly column, he emphasized that introducing such technology would modernize training methods and help bridge the gap between local and international football standards. Kamanga also highlighted the importance of such tools in advancing the league’s competitiveness.

“There could not have been better news coming out of Football House this week than the arrival of the Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment that will be distributed to all the 18 Super League teams,” Kamanga said.

“As part of our commitment to help our clubs modernize their operations, we undertook to secure GPS equipment for all the Super League teams through the support of FIFA.”

Kamanga added that distribution of the equipment that is currently at Football House will commence in the next few days.

He has urged the clubs to keep the equipment safe to prolong its longevity.

“We will be handing out the equipment to all the teams in the next few days. It is a development that we have no doubt will completely change the face of the Zambian game. Our appeal to the clubs is that they guard this equipment jealously, as it has come at a great cost,” Kamanga said.

The deployment of GPS technology aligns with FAZ’s broader vision to elevate Zambian football through innovation and global best practices. The equipment is expected to empower teams to adapt to modern football demands and improve performance on the domestic and continental stages.

As clubs prepare to integrate this technology into their setups, FAZ plans to provide training and guidance on its effective use. The move is expected to strengthen the league’s stature and enhance the overall quality of football in Zambia.
