Defensive Dilemma: Who Partners Sunzu in the Zambia Vs Egypt Game
In the highly anticipated match between Zambia and Egypt, the Chipolopolo face a defensive dilemma. The absence of Frankie Chisenga Musonda, who is sidelined due to injury, presents a significant challenge for coach Avram Grant. The focus is on who will partner Stopila Sunzu in central defense in this crucial encounter against Egypt, a team known for its formidable attacking prowess.
Stopila Sunzu, a seasoned player with over 75 appearances for Zambia and a 2012 AFCON winner, is the most experienced player in the squad. His presence and wealth of experience are key to Zambia’s hopes of containing Egypt’s star player, Mohamed Salah, often likened to the “Egyptian Messi.” Salah’s scoring ability and individual brilliance pose a significant threat.
With Musonda unavailable, Grant needs to forge a new defensive partnership for this all-important match. Unfortunately, Tandi Mwape is also unavailable, leaving three players to compete for the central defense role: Dominic Chanda of Power Dynamos, Gift Mphande, who plays in Israel, and Luka Banda from NAPSA Stars.
Among these contenders, Dominic Chanda stands out as the likely candidate to partner Sunzu in the heart of the defense. His experience and understanding of the game make him a strong contender for the role. Nevertheless, the competition for the position remains fierce, and the final decision lies with the coach.
Roderick Kabwe, who plays in Iraq, is expected to secure the left-back position over John Chishimba. Kabwe has consistently delivered solid performances, solidifying his place in the squad.

On the right side, Benedict Chepeshi, the captain of Red Arrows, is likely to retain his starting role. Chepeshi showcased his abilities in the recent AFCON qualifiers, where he set up Leicester City forward Patson Daka for the only goal of the game in Moroni last month. His strong defensive skills and contributions in attack make him a valuable asset.
Additionally, Zephaniah Phiri from Prison Leopards offers another option for the right-back position, providing depth to the squad.
The Zambia vs. Egypt match is highly anticipated, as both teams strive for victory in this international friendly. It is the first time these two teams are meeting since 2015, adding to the excitement. The kickoff for the match is set for 20:00 local time, equivalent to 18:00 Zambian time. Football fans eagerly await the outcome of this game, as the teams battle it out in this high-stakes encounter.
