
Copper Queens Defeated by USA 3-0 in Group B Opener
The Zambia Women’s national team suffered a 3-0 defeat to the USA in their Group B opening fixture on Thursday. The match, held as part of the tournament’s group stage, saw the American team dominate with an early lead and a quickfire brace.
The USA took the lead in the 17th minute with a well-taken goal by Trinity Rodman. Just minutes later, Mallory Swanson hit a quickfire brace, scoring twice within a minute to increase their advantage. The situation worsened for Zambia when defender Pauline Zulu was sent off before the half-hour mark, reducing the Copper Queens to ten players.
In response to the challenging first half, Zambia’s coach Bruce Mwape made a triple substitution before the break. Aveil Chitundu came on to replace Prisca Chilufya, while Grace Chanda, who started in a holding role, was substituted for Esther Muchinga. The tactical changes aimed to stabilize the team and mitigate the impact of being a player down.
After the break, Zambia adopted a more defensive approach, playing in a low block with Barbra Banda positioned as a lone striker. Racheal Kundananji shifted to a more central attacking midfield role, aiming to create opportunities despite the numerical disadvantage.
