Copper Queens Clinch 2024 COSAFA Title on Penalties
Zambia’s Copper Queens have secured their second COSAFA Women’s Championship title after a thrilling penalty shootout win over South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, following a goalless draw in extra time.
The Copper Queens displayed dominance throughout the tournament, remaining unbeaten and not conceding a single goal. In the final showdown, goalkeeper Ngambo Musole emerged as the hero, saving two penalties and scoring one herself, sealing Zambia’s 4-3 victory in the shootout.

This triumph marks a significant comeback after last year’s narrow loss to Malawi in the final, reaffirming Zambia’s rising prominence in women’s football. Head coach Florence Mwila made history as the first female coach to lead a Zambian team to an international trophy, a momentous achievement for her and her assistants, Enala Phiri and William Njobvu. Mwila praised her team’s resilience and dedication, especially from the young players debuting in the national squad.
The Copper Queens will now set their sights on the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, aiming to build on their success after finishing third in 2022.
