Former Chipolopolo winger and international football consultant Clifford Mulenga has called on the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) to launch a national fundraising campaign to support the Copper Queens ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
In an open appeal, Clifford Mulenga acknowledged the financial challenges currently facing FAZ and suggested that the association adopt a new approach by bringing together corporate Zambia, football supporters, the diaspora and the wider public to help prepare the national team for the continental showpiece.
He believes the Copper Queens deserve the best possible support as they prepare for what could be a defining tournament for the current generation of players.
“They Deserve the Very Best”
Mulenga described the current Copper Queens squad as arguably the greatest generation in the history of Zambian women’s football.
He noted that for many of the players, WAFCON 2026 could be their final appearance at the tournament, making it essential that they receive the highest level of preparation.
According to Mulenga, investing in the team now would not only improve their chances of success but also recognise the outstanding contribution they have made to Zambian football over the years.
Learning From Past Success
The former Chipolopolo star pointed to Zambia’s historic 2012 Africa Cup of Nations triumph as proof that success comes through careful planning, investment and national unity.
He argued that the same level of commitment should now be directed towards the Copper Queens as they seek to compete with the continent’s best and pursue another FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification.
Mulenga also recalled the committee of eminent women led by Ms. Charity Lumpa, which was established after Zambia qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
He said the initiative demonstrated the importance of community involvement in sports development and could serve as a model for supporting the Copper Queens.
A Call for National Unity
Mulenga urged FAZ to spearhead a fundraising campaign that would unite corporate Zambia, the diaspora, football fans and every patriotic Zambian behind one common objective.
He believes thousands of people would be willing to contribute if given a transparent platform to support the team.
In his closing remarks, Mulenga emphasised that while great teams make history, it is great nations that stand firmly behind them.
Conclusion
As the Copper Queens continue preparations for WAFCON 2026, Clifford Mulenga believes the time has come for the country to rally behind one of Zambia’s most successful national teams.
His proposal for a nationwide fundraising campaign seeks to ensure the players receive the support and preparation they deserve as they chase continental success and another FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification.
