Mutapa’s Chipolopolo Role: Will It Affect Dynamos’ Title Push?
By Enock Phiri
The concern from some Power Dynamos supporters is understandable, especially considering the timing of Oswald Mutapa joining the Zambia national football team technical bench with roughly ten matches left in the season. At this stage of a campaign, every detail matters for teams pushing for continental qualification.
However, several factors should be considered before concluding that the appointment will negatively affect Power Dynamos’ ambitions.
First, modern football often allows coaches to handle dual responsibilities at club and national team level, particularly when the national team role is not full-time. International duties usually occur during FIFA windows, which limits the day-to-day disruption to club work. If Mutapa’s role with Chipolopolo is structured around those windows, the practical impact on his work at Power Dynamos may be minimal.
Second, Power Dynamos’ push to return to the CAF Champions League will depend more on squad depth, consistency, and how well the technical bench manages the final run of fixtures. The presence of a broader technical team at the club can help maintain continuity when one member has national team commitments.
Third, the appointment can also be viewed as recognition of Mutapa’s tactical competence. For the club, having a coach who is trusted at national level may even raise the profile and confidence within the dressing room. Players often respond positively when their coach is involved with the national setup because it signals technical credibility.
The real risk would arise only if the national team duties began to overlap heavily with critical league preparations. With ten matches remaining, the decisive factor will be how the club manages planning, delegation within the technical staff, and maintaining focus on results.
In short, the appointment is unlikely to derail Power Dynamos’ ambitions on its own. What will determine whether they secure a return to continental football is performance on the pitch during the run-in.
