Chiparamba Legends Honour Late Rupiah Banda

A group of former Chiparamba Youth Academy stars has come together to honor the legacy of the academy’s founding chairman and former Zambian President Rupiah Banda, affectionately known as RB.

Leading the initiative are notable figures in Zambian football, including 2007 CAF Young Player of the Year Clifford Mulenga, ex-Chipolopolo players William Njobvu and Boyd Mwila, and Moses “Suker” Banda.

RB was not only a passionate football supporter but also a key figure in shaping Zambian football. During the 1980s, he played a pivotal role in opening opportunities for Zambian players in Europe, facilitating the rise of legends like Kalusha Bwalya, Lucky Msiska, and Charles Musonda.

His involvement in Chiparamba Youth Academy unearthed some of Zambia’s most talented players, during a time when EduSport and Afrisports were also flourishing.

To commemorate his contributions, the legends unveiled a special jersey embossed with RB’s name. Moses Banda emphasized the deep respect and inspiration drawn from RB, stating:

“RB is the father of our entire nation but also our personal football father. We shall always remember him, and for us as Chiparamba legends, we decided to put his name on the shirt as that just gives us superpower when we play.”

William Njobvu: Now part of the U-15 National Team technical bench and assistant coach at Super League side Atletico Lusaka.
Clifford Mulenga: Currently serves as Youth Development Officer at FAZ.
RB’s enduring legacy is also tied to his leadership roles in Zambian football, including his service as FAZ vice chairman, cementing his lasting impact on the sport.

The gesture by the Chiparamba legends serves as a reminder of how football transcends generations, with RB’s influence continuing to inspire the nation’s football ecosystem.
