The Zambian Premier League (ZPL) has confirmed a significant restructuring of Zambia’s continental qualification framework, announcing that the winners of the ABSA Cup will secure the country’s slot in the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup. The directive marks a decisive departure from previous regulations, where the MTN Super League runners-up claimed the Confederation Cup berth.
Under the revised structure, the 2025/26 MTN Super League champions will continue to represent Zambia in the CAF Champions League, while the ABSA Cup winners will assume responsibility for the Confederation Cup campaign. ZPL Chief Executive Officer Joseph Chimpampwe clarified the position, outlining that cup success now carries direct continental consequences.
Importantly, contingency provisions have also been defined. In the event that a single club completes a domestic double by winning both the league and the ABSA Cup, the Confederation Cup slot will transfer to the ABSA Cup runners-up. This safeguard ensures that Zambia maintains full representation across CAF competitions without redundancy.
ABSA Cup Restored to Continental Significance
The policy shift fundamentally elevates the status of the ABSA Cup within Zambia’s football ecosystem. Previously perceived as secondary to league performance, the knockout competition now represents the most attainable continental pathway for clubs unable to sustain a full-season title challenge. In structural terms, it rebalances domestic incentives and intensifies the competitive value of cup football.
Seven MTN Super League clubs — ZESCO United, Power Dynamos FC, Red Arrows FC, Kabwe Warriors FC, Nchanga Rangers FC, Mufulira Wanderers FC and Zanaco FC — will enter the ABSA Cup at the main stage, receiving byes from the preliminary round. Their participation immediately enhances the tournament’s competitive intensity.
Chimpampwe further stressed that qualification alone does not guarantee continental participation. Clubs must satisfy the regulatory standards set under CAF Club Licensing Regulations, administered locally by the Football Association of Zambia. Compliance extends beyond on-field performance to infrastructure standards, administrative capacity, legal governance and financial sustainability.
Strategic Implications for Domestic Clubs
The revised qualification model introduces a recalibration of sporting priorities. Clubs now face a dual-path strategic framework: pursue league consistency for Champions League qualification or target a concentrated, high-stakes cup campaign for Confederation Cup access. For mid-table sides, the ABSA Cup may represent a more realistic continental route than a 34-match title pursuit.
Financially, the stakes are considerable. CAF participation unlocks matchday revenue, broadcast exposure and sponsorship leverage. In a domestic environment where financial margins can be narrow, continental qualification often determines long-term sustainability and squad retention capabilities.
From a governance perspective, the directive signals a deliberate attempt by ZPL to revitalise cup football and enhance competitive diversity in continental representation. By redistributing opportunity, the league encourages broader ambition rather than concentrating continental access solely among top-two league finishers.
The decision to allocate the CAF Confederation Cup slot to ABSA Cup winners represents more than administrative adjustment — it is a structural recalibration of Zambia’s competitive incentives. Cup football now carries direct continental consequence, compelling clubs to align technical preparation and administrative compliance accordingly.
As the 2025/26 season unfolds, the ABSA Cup will no longer be viewed as supplementary silverware. It has become a gateway to Africa.
