The ZPL National League is reaching its decisive stage, with teams battling for promotion, mid-table stability, and survival. Week 27 delivered a thrilling set of fixtures, with some teams taking massive strides towards their goals, while others suffered setbacks that could prove costly. Konkola Blades remain top of the table, but their grip on the summit was slightly loosened after dropping points, allowing their closest challengers an opportunity to close in. Meanwhile, the relegation battle intensified as bottom-placed teams fought desperately to stay afloat. Here’s how the results shaped the league table and what they mean for each team.
Aguila Stars 1-2 Mines United
Mines United edged past Aguila Stars in a tightly contested match, with Nicholas Mulilo and Glorie Bakafwa getting on the scoresheet to secure a crucial away win. Lawrence Lubinda had given Aguila Stars hope, but they couldn’t hold off the visitors. This victory pushes Mines United (3rd, 47 points) closer to the top two, keeping their promotion dream alive. For Aguila Stars, the loss sees them stuck in 10th place, missing an opportunity to climb into the top half.
Trident 5-1 Mpulungu Harbour
A ruthless attacking display from Trident saw them demolish Mpulungu Harbour in one of the biggest wins of the week. Nicholas Chipoya, Maurice Sichone, Lewis Mwape (2), and Kelvin Mavinga all found the net in a commanding performance. Mpulungu Harbour’s Kelvin Lwipa scored a consolation, but his side was completely outclassed. This emphatic win keeps Trident (5th, 41 points) in the top five, though their promotion hopes remain slim. Mpulungu Harbour (7th, 36 points) drop further from the chasing pack, highlighting defensive issues that need urgent fixing.
Young Green Buffaloes 1-0 Leopards Hill
A lone goal from Stephen Malama was enough to hand Young Green Buffaloes a much-needed win over bottom-placed Leopards Hill. This result lifts Young Green Buffaloes (14th, 26 points) slightly above the danger zone, giving them a fighting chance in the relegation battle. For Leopards Hill (18th, 22 points), yet another defeat deepens their troubles, and their chances of survival look increasingly slim unless they can find a drastic turnaround.
Chambishi 1-1 Konkola Blades
League leaders Konkola Blades (1st, 59 points) were held to a frustrating draw by Chambishi in a gritty contest. Christopher Chulu opened the scoring for the home side, but Laurent Muma rescued a point for Konkola Blades. While Blades remain on top, this result means they missed a golden chance to extend their lead. Chambishi (15th, 26 points) will take heart from holding the league leaders, but they are still fighting for their lives in the relegation zone.
River Plate 3-0 Prison Leopards
River Plate continued their fine form with a dominant 3-0 victory over Prison Leopards, thanks to goals from Golden Zansi and a brace from Marone Musonda. This win pushes River Plate (4th, 46 points) to within a point of the promotion zone, intensifying the battle at the top. Meanwhile, Prison Leopards (6th, 41 points) suffer a setback, failing to close the gap on the top four. Their defensive frailties were exposed, and they must regroup quickly.
Chirundu United 2-1 Kansanshi Dynamos
A massive upset in the promotion race! Chirundu United pulled off a stunning 2-1 victory over second-placed Kansanshi Dynamos, with Lameck Manda and Godfrey Chinga scoring to hand the hosts all three points. Rabson Mumba pulled one back for Kansanshi, but it wasn’t enough. This loss is a huge blow to Kansanshi Dynamos (2nd, 54 points), who remain five points off the top and will feel they missed a golden chance to close the gap. Chirundu United (8th, 35 points) boost their mid-table position and show they are capable of taking down big teams.
Chipata United 1-0 Kitwe United
Chipata United snatched a crucial 1-0 win over Kitwe United, with Paul Gundunza netting the winner in a tense match. This victory is a massive boost for Chipata United (17th, 25 points) in their fight against relegation, keeping their survival hopes alive. Kitwe United (13th, 30 points), on the other hand, will be kicking themselves for dropping points in a game they should have at least drawn.
Kafue Eagles 0-0 Jumulo
A goalless stalemate saw both sides cancel each other out in a match with few clear-cut chances. This result does little to change the standings, with Kafue Eagles (11th, 31 points) and Jumulo (9th, 35 points) both maintaining mid-table positions. However, Eagles will feel this was a missed opportunity to move further away from the relegation scrap.
Kafue Celtics 0-0 Ndola United
Another cagey encounter ended in a goalless draw, with neither Kafue Celtics nor Ndola United able to break the deadlock. Kafue Celtics (16th, 25 points) remain in deep relegation trouble, and this result does little to ease their concerns. Ndola United (12th, 31 points), meanwhile, continue their inconsistent form but stay in a relatively safe position.
Conclusion
- Konkola Blades stay top despite dropping points.
- Kansanshi Dynamos stumble, allowing Mines United and River Plate to close in.
- Chirundu United’s upset win shakes up the top four race.
- Trident’s big win keeps them in the hunt.
- Chipata United, Young Green Buffaloes, and Chambishi boost their survival hopes.
- Leopards Hill in serious relegation danger.
With just seven games left, the stakes are higher than ever!
