Week 21 of the ZPL National League brought significant shifts to the league standings as teams battled for points that would impact their position on the log. Here’s how the results have influenced the standings:
1. Konkola Blades Stay on Top Despite Defeat
Despite losing 2-1 to Prison Leopards, Konkola Blades remain at the summit of the league table with 47 points. Their consistent performances earlier in the season have given them a comfortable six-point lead over Kansanshi Dynamos. However, the defeat highlights that they cannot afford to relax as the season progresses.
2. Kansanshi Dynamos Narrow the Gap
Kansanshi Dynamos remain second with 41 points despite their 2-1 loss to Riverplate. Dalitso Lungu’s goal wasn’t enough to secure points for Kansanshi, but they continue to chase Konkola Blades for the top spot.
3. Prison Leopards Strengthen Their Position
Prison Leopards’ 2-1 victory over Konkola Blades was crucial in solidifying their third-place position with 37 points. Goals from Emmanuel Chabula and Landu Miete ensured their eighth win of the season, keeping them within touching distance of the top two.
4. Riverplate Climb to Fourth
Riverplate’s impressive 2-1 win over Kansanshi Dynamos sees them climb to fourth place with 36 points. Boyd Kauya and Golden Zansi were the heroes of the match, pushing Riverplate closer to the top three.
5. Trident and Mines United Battle for Fifth
Trident and Mines United remain in close competition, sitting fifth and sixth on the table with 32 and 31 points, respectively. Trident’s loss to Kafue Eagles allowed Mines United to close the gap with their goalless draw against Ndola United.
6. Jumulo Edge Upward
Jumulo’s 1-0 win over Kafue Celtic, courtesy of Moses Chileshe’s penalty, sees them climb to seventh with 29 points. The victory provides a much-needed boost as they aim for a top-half finish.
7. Aguila Stars Make a Statement
Aguila Stars’ 2-0 victory over Chirundu United, with goals from Matias Kalemba and Charles Mwila, pushes them to ninth place with 26 points. Their recent form could help them rise further up the table.
8. Struggles at the Bottom
Chipata United remains at the bottom with 18 points following their 1-1 draw with Chambishi. Meanwhile, Chambishi, Leopards Hill, and Kitwe United continue their fight to escape the relegation zone. Kitwe United, with a game in hand, could still move out of the danger zone if they win their next match against Leopards Hill.
The Week 21 results have made the race for the top and the relegation battle even more intense. With a few games remaining, every point matters as teams aim to secure their targets for the season.
