Eden University Women’s Super League champions Zesco Ndola Girls made history by booking their first-ever place in the CAF Women’s Champions League | COSAFA Qualifiers final, following a stunning comeback victory against two-time continental champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies.
The Zambian side overturned a first-half deficit to claim a 2-1 win at the UJ AW Muller Stadium, ensuring their debut campaign continues with a shot at silverware. They will face Gaborone United Ladies FC of Botswana in the final on Sunday in Johannesburg.
Zesco’s Historic Comeback
Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies looked in control when Boitumelo Rabale put them ahead just before halftime. But Zesco Ndola Girls refused to give in, mounting a spirited second-half fightback.
Eneless Phiri leveled matters shortly after the restart before substitute Fridah Kabwe sealed the turnaround with a decisive strike that sent Zesco through to their maiden COSAFA Qualifiers final.
Coach Zulu Praises Hard Work and Resilience
Speaking after the game, head coach William Zulu credited his side’s resilience and determination:
“Our strength lies in hard work. Today, the players kept working hard until the very end.”
Reflecting on their tactical shift from the group stage, Zulu noted:
“In the first game, we wanted to defend, and we hoped the worst result could have been a draw, but we failed. Today, we played our normal game.”
Eyes on the CAF Women’s Champions League
With one hurdle cleared, Zulu emphasized that his team’s mission is far from over.
“Our goal is to go to the CAF Women’s Champions League. Our song is going to the CAF Women’s Champions League. We have crossed one bridge, we are remaining with another, and we have to work hard to cross the final bridge.”
Message to the Fans
The Zesco coach also reserved praise for the supporters back home in Zambia:
“Thank you very much for supporting us. We have been going through the good things they have been saying, encouraging us. Please continue encouraging us until we lift the trophy.”
What’s Next
Zesco Ndola Girls will now face Gaborone United Ladies FC in a historic COSAFA Qualifiers final at the UJ AW Muller Stadium on Sunday.
