Zambia’s Football at Risk: FIFA Issues Warning Over FAZ Governance

FIFA Warns Zambian Government Against Interference in FAZ Affairs

FIFA Warns Zambian Government Against Interference in FAZ Affairs

The world football governing body, FIFA, has issued a strong warning to the Zambian government over third-party interference in the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) electoral process. The warning follows a letter from the National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ), which proposed setting up a transitional committee and an independent electoral body just weeks before FAZ’s elective Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Livingstone.

FIFA has made it clear that any deviation from its statutes regarding independent football governance could result in severe sanctions, including a suspension from international football. This development places Zambian football at a critical juncture as FAZ prepares for its March 29 elections.

FIFA Issues Strong Warning to FAZ and Zambian Authorities

FIFA’s Chief Member Associations Officer, Elkhan Mammadov, addressed a formal letter to FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga, stressing that government interference in FAZ operations violates FIFA’s core principles.

“Every member association of FIFA is statutorily obliged to manage its affairs independently and without undue influence from third parties, including governmental bodies,” the letter states.

This statement underscores FIFA’s zero tolerance for external interference in football governance, as outlined in Articles 14 and 19 of the FIFA Statutes. FIFA further warned that if the Zambian authorities proceed with forming a transitional committee, FAZ would risk sanctions, including possible suspension.

Risk of FIFA Suspension Looms Over Zambia

The consequences of FIFA suspension would be devastating for Zambian football, as it would mean:

  • Exclusion from international competitions, including the 2025 AFCON qualifiers and FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
  • Zambian clubs being barred from CAF tournaments, such as the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.
  • Loss of FIFA and CAF development funds, which support grassroots and elite football in the country.

“Should this Transitional Committee be indeed established, FAZ would be at risk of breaching the abovementioned statutory provision. Should this happen, FIFA will have no other option but to submit the matter to its relevant decision-making body for consideration and decision, which might also include the suspension of FAZ,” FIFA warned.

With FIFA closely monitoring the situation, any further government action could push Zambia closer to an international football crisis.

FAZ Reaffirms Commitment to FIFA-Approved Roadmap

In response to the unfolding situation, FAZ has notified the NSCZ that it will hold an executive committee meeting on Friday, March 7, 2025, to approve the financial reports ahead of the March 29 AGM.

FAZ officials maintain that the electoral process is on track, in line with FIFA’s approved roadmap.

“As per constitutional requirement, Exco must approve the financials before they are sent to the members. We are on course for the March 29 AGM with all the constitutional requirements fulfilled as per FIFA-approved guidelines,” said a FAZ spokesperson.

This suggests that FAZ intends to proceed with its elections independently, despite pressure from the government and NSCZ.

What Happens Next?

With FIFA keeping a close eye on the situation, the coming days will be crucial in determining whether Zambia avoids a potential ban. The March 7 FAZ executive meeting and March 29 AGM will be decisive moments for Zambian football governance.

The Zambian authorities now face a choice: either step back and allow FAZ to conduct its elections as per FIFA rules or risk the nation’s footballing future by insisting on government involvement.

Conclusion

FIFA’s warning serves as a wake-up call for the Zambian government to respect football independence and avoid actions that could jeopardize the country’s participation in international football. With FAZ committed to a FIFA-approved electoral process, the next few weeks will be critical in determining whether Zambia remains in compliance or faces harsh sanctions.

As tensions rise, the hope among players, fans, and stakeholders is that a solution will be found without FIFA taking drastic action.
