The Call to Prioritize Youth Development in Zambian Football

The recent decision to bring back Sate Sate Kampamba from retirement, merely six months after his announcement, raises critical questions about the direction of Zambian football. While Sate Sate has undeniably been an iconic figure in the domestic league, this move symbolizes a reluctance to embrace progress and a troubling dependence on past glories.

Zambian football has long preached the importance of developing young talent, yet the practice often falls short. Our coaches must demonstrate the courage to build their teams around players who align with modern football philosophies just as the late Masauso Mwale did during his tenure at Nkana from 2011 to 2014. Mwale’s bold decision to integrate young talent into the squad culminated in Nkana’s 12th league title, an achievement that remains a testament to the value of trusting youth.

However, how can young players remain motivated when they see retired veterans returning to the pitch while their own opportunities dwindle? The decision to prioritize aged legs over fresh blood stifles the ambitions of upcoming stars and undermines the development pipeline. We must take inspiration from Coach Brian Kunsanama of Atletico Lusaka, who offered Abel Nyirongo a senior team opportunity following his outstanding performance at the U17 COSAFA tournament. Nyirongo’s subsequent impact—including goals against Zesco United and Forest Rangers proves that investing in youth can yield immediate and long-term rewards.

Football careers are notoriously short, and players must know when to step aside for the next generation. Continuing to rely on veterans due to their past achievements does little to build a sustainable future. While experience has its place, coaches must balance it with the vitality and potential of younger players. Unfortunately, the focus on short-term results often leads to neglecting the foundational work necessary to ensure long-term league dominance.

Coaches like Shipo Mumbi of NAPSA Stars, Chisi Mbewe of Red Arrows, and Wedson Nyirenda during his time at Zanaco FC have shown that integrating youth into the first team can yield success. Their approaches highlight the potential of creating squads capable of dominating for three to four years while simultaneously inspiring future talents.

Zambian football is not short of promising academies producing exceptional players. Yet, these young athletes brimming with ambition need a clear pathway to the top tier. By continually recalling retired players, we send a discouraging message to the under-15s, under-19s, and under-20s: that their hard work may go unrecognized.

It is time for Zambian coaches to create room for young talent in their squads. Retired players should focus on mentoring the next generation or pursuing other roles in the sport. Our premier league must reflect the vibrancy and potential of our youth if we are to secure a bright future for Zambian football. Let’s embrace the next generation and give them the stage they deserve to showcase their abilities.
