South Africa Qualify for 2026 FIFA World Cup

South Africa Qualify for 2026 FIFA World Cup

South Africa has officially qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time since hosting the global showpiece in 2010, sealing their place with a commanding 3-0 victory over Rwanda, while Nigeria’s 4-0 triumph over Benin confirmed their spot at the top of the group.

This marks Bafana Bafana’s fourth World Cup appearance, having previously featured in 1998, 2002, and 2010. But unlike their last outing where they entered as hosts this qualification was earned the hard way, through discipline, belief, and tactical brilliance under head coach Hugo Broos.

Dominant From Start to Finish

The celebrations began early as Thalente Mbatha opened the scoring just five minutes in with a powerful long-range strike that slipped past goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari. The early goal fired up the crowd, and Bafana Bafana continued to push forward with confidence and aggression.

Their persistence paid off when Oswin Appollis netted the second midway through the first half, sending the stadium into a frenzy. Despite several missed chances before the break, South Africa maintained control throughout.

With 20 minutes left, Appollis turned provider as his pinpoint corner was met by Evidence Makgopa, who headed home from close range to complete the rout.

Qualification Secured — Despite Setbacks

The final whistle sparked scenes of jubilation, especially after confirmation filtered through that Nigeria had beaten Benin 4-0, led by a Victor Osimhen hat-trick. South Africa topped the group by a single point, despite suffering a three-point deduction earlier in the campaign for fielding an ineligible player against Lesotho.

Head coach Hugo Broos praised his squad’s unwavering belief.

“We all knew that we could do it. We believed in ourselves from the beginning,” Broos told SABC Sport.
“Nigeria did what they had to do — and we did what we had to do. We’re going to the World Cup. Fantastic.”

What’s Next?

Bafana Bafana will now shift focus to preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by USA, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19. Meanwhile, Nigeria — despite missing automatic qualification — have secured a CAF playoff spot alongside DR Congo, Cameroon, and Gabon, where they’ll fight for a place in the intercontinental playoffs.
