Silver Strikers Kick Off 2025 Season with Charity Shield Triumph
Silver Strikers have secured the 2025 Charity Shield, defeating Mighty Wanderers 3-2 on penalties after an exciting 2-2 draw in regulation time at Bingu National Stadium. The match officially marked the start of Malawi’s 2025 football season, with the TNM Super League set to begin the following week.
Wanderers Take the Lead, Silver Strikers Fight Back
The contest saw Wanderers take the lead in the 26th minute when Sama Tanjong finished off a precise cross from Blessings Singini.
Silver Strikers responded in the second half, leveling through Binwell Katinji, only for Singini to restore Wanderers’ lead. However, Silver showed resilience, with Patrick Macheso finding the equalizer to send the match into a penalty shootout.
Penalty Shootout Drama
With the scores tied at 2-2, the game was decided by penalties, where Silver Strikers held their nerve to win 3-2, claiming the first silverware of the season.
Silver Stadium vs. Bingu National Stadium Controversy
Despite their victory, Silver Strikers have expressed dissatisfaction with playing at Bingu National Stadium, arguing that Silver Stadium is their rightful home ground.
Club CEO Patrick Chimimba voiced his concerns:
“We are wondering why we should host Bullets at Bingu when we have a proper stadium. We have written to Sulom to change the venue.”
However, the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has stood firm, stating that Bingu National Stadium will host the season-opening fixture between Silver Strikers and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets as part of the league’s official launch.
With the TNM Super League set to kick off soon, Silver Strikers will now shift their focus to defending their league title, starting with a tough clash against FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in Lilongwe.
