Senegal Sack Pape Thiaw After World Cup Exit

Senegal Sack Pape Thiaw After World Cup Exit

The Senegal Football Federation (FSF) has dismissed head coach Pape Thiaw following the Teranga Lions’ disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Thiaw, who had been in charge since December 2024, leaves the role after Senegal were eliminated in the Round of 32 despite coming close to reaching the last 16.

The decision comes after the federation conducted what it described as a thorough review of the national team’s recent performances and future prospects.

World Cup Campaign Ends in Heartbreak

Senegal endured a mixed campaign at the tournament.

The Teranga Lions lost their opening two group matches against France and Norway, leaving their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

However, they responded emphatically by thrashing Iraq 5-0 in their final group match to secure a place in the knockout stages as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Their World Cup journey ended in dramatic fashion against Belgium.

Senegal raced into a 2-0 lead, but Belgium mounted a remarkable comeback by scoring twice late in regulation time before netting the winner in extra time to claim a 3-2 victory.

FSF Explains Decision

In a statement, the Senegal Football Federation confirmed that it had decided to part ways with Thiaw following an assessment of the team’s direction.

“After a thorough evaluation of the sporting results and prospects of the national team, the Senegal Football Federation has decided to dismiss Pape Thiaw in the best interests of Senegalese football.”

The federation has yet to announce who will take over as head coach.

Player Frustration Emerges

The dismissal comes amid signs of unrest within the national team setup.

Following the defeat to Belgium, midfielder Pape Gueye revealed that he would be stepping away from international football while the current management remained in place.

His comments fuelled speculation over the future of the coaching staff, with the federation ultimately deciding to make a change.

Search for a Successor Begins

The FSF is now expected to begin the search for a new head coach capable of leading Senegal into the next phase of international competition.

Despite the World Cup disappointment, Senegal remains one of Africa’s strongest footballing nations and will be aiming to bounce back quickly ahead of upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and future international tournaments.

Conclusion

Pape Thiaw’s tenure comes to an end after less than two years in charge, with Senegal opting for a fresh direction following their World Cup exit.

The next appointment will be crucial as the Teranga Lions seek to return to winning ways and challenge for major honours on the African continent.
