Senegal Join African Charge Into World Cup Last 32

Senegal produced a stunning performance to become the seventh African nation to qualify for the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after demolishing Iraq 5-0 and benefiting from Egypt’s 1-1 draw with Iran.

The emphatic victory not only secured the points the Lions of Teranga desperately needed but also boosted their goal difference sufficiently to clinch one of the tournament’s best third-placed qualification spots.

It marks a historic moment for African football, with seven of the continent’s ten representatives progressing to the knockout stages.

Five-Star Senegal Too Strong for Iraq

Senegal wasted no time asserting their dominance.

Habib Diarra opened the scoring after just four minutes, heading home from an Abdoulaye Seck corner to give the West Africans the perfect start.

Iraq’s hopes suffered another major setback eight minutes later when defender Rebin Sulaka was sent off for bringing down Sadio Mané as he raced through on goal.

Despite playing with a numerical advantage, Senegal had to wait until the 56th minute before Ismaila Sarr doubled their lead.

The floodgates then opened.

Substitute Pape Gueye produced two spectacular long-range strikes in the 59th and 71st minutes before Iliman Ndiaye completed the rout with another stunning effort in the 82nd minute.

The 5-0 victory also saw Senegal become the first African nation in FIFA World Cup history to score five goals in a single match.

Egypt Result Confirms Qualification

Senegal’s qualification was officially confirmed after Egypt played out a 1-1 draw against Iran.

Mahmoud Saber gave the Pharaohs an early lead before Ramin Rezaeian equalised just nine minutes later.

A missed penalty and a disallowed goal in stoppage time ultimately ensured Senegal advanced as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Egypt had already secured qualification before kickoff and finished second in Group G behind Belgium, who defeated New Zealand 5-1 to top the group on goal difference.

Cape Verde Continue Fairytale

Elsewhere, Cape Verde continued their remarkable debut World Cup campaign by holding Saudi Arabia to a goalless draw.

The result was enough to send the Blue Sharks into the Round of 32 unbeaten after navigating a difficult group featuring Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.

Spain finished top of Group H following a 1-0 victory over Uruguay.

Seven African Nations Through

Senegal now joins Morocco, South Africa, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ghana and Cape Verde in the knockout stages.

The achievement represents one of Africa’s strongest collective performances at a FIFA World Cup.

Attention now turns to DR Congo and Algeria, who still have the opportunity to increase the continent’s representation in the knockout rounds.

Tunisia, however, have already been eliminated from the competition.

Round of 32 Fixtures Taking Shape

Africa’s representatives now face a series of challenging knockout ties:

  • South Africa vs Canada
