Senegal Edge Morocco in Chaotic AFCON Final to Claim Second Continental Title

Senegal Edge Morocco in Chaotic AFCON Final to Claim Second Continental Title

Senegal were crowned Africa Cup of Nations champions for the second time in their history after a dramatic 1–0 extra-time victory over hosts Morocco in a controversial and chaotic final played in Rabat.

Senegal Control Early Proceedings

Senegal dominated the opening half, asserting control through disciplined pressing and fluid attacking play. They came close to opening the scoring on two occasions, only to be denied by outstanding saves from Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Morocco, despite home support, failed to register a single shot on target before the interval.

Second-Half Tension and Growing Controversy

After the break, Senegal continued to dictate the tempo, although Morocco became more direct in their approach. As the match edged toward stoppage time, controversy took centre stage when Senegal had a goal by Ismaïla Sarr disallowed for an alleged foul on Achraf Hakimi.

Moments later, Morocco were awarded a penalty in the 94th minute after Brahim Díaz was adjudged to have been fouled by El Hadji Malick Diouf during a corner kick. The decision sparked outrage among Senegal’s players and technical bench, leading head coach Pape Thiaw to instruct his team to temporarily walk off the pitch in protest.

Mendy Saves, Senegal Regroup

Following more than 20 minutes of delays and confusion, Senegal captain Sadio Mané intervened, persuading his teammates to return and resume the match. When play restarted, Edouard Mendy produced a crucial moment, comfortably saving Díaz’s attempted panenka penalty to keep Senegal alive.

Pape Gueye Delivers the Decisive Moment

The match progressed into extra time, where Senegal appeared calmer and more composed. Their persistence paid off four minutes into the first period when Pape Gueye surged past Achraf Hakimi and fired a stunning left-footed strike beyond Bounou to give Senegal the decisive lead.

Morocco pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Senegal’s defence held firm to see out the contest and seal a historic triumph.

Individual Awards and Tournament Honours

Sadio Mané was named Player of the Tournament, while Morocco’s Brahim Díaz claimed the Golden Boot after scoring five goals. Yassine Bounou received the Golden Glove, and Morocco were awarded the Fair Play Award at the conclusion of a dramatic AFCON final night.
