Relegated Mines United closed the curtain on a difficult 2025/26 MTN Super League campaign with a rare 1-0 victory over Green Eagles in Kabwe.
Maximilian Mushimba scored the only goal of the match in the 43rd minute to hand Mines United just their third win of the season and complete a surprising league double over Green Eagles.
Although the result could not change their relegation fate, it at least provided a small moment of celebration after a season filled with struggles.
Rare Victory for Mines United
Mines United entered the match already confirmed for relegation after enduring one of the toughest campaigns in the league.
Before Sunday’s victory, the club had not tasted victory since January 31 — ironically also against Green Eagles in another 1-0 win.
Since that result, Mines United went through a painful 16-match winless run in which they lost 13 matches and managed only three draws.
However, despite their struggles throughout the season, they once again found a way to frustrate Green Eagles.
Mushimba Delivers Winning Goal
The decisive moment arrived two minutes before halftime when Maximilian Mushimba found the breakthrough for Mines United.
His goal in the 43rd minute proved enough to separate the two sides in a tightly contested encounter.
The strike sparked celebrations among the Mines United players and supporters as the team finally ended its long wait for victory.
Tough Season for Mines United
Despite the positive ending, Mines United still finish bottom of the MTN Super League table with only 18 points from a possible 102.
The club managed just three wins throughout the entire campaign, highlighting the difficult season they endured.
Interestingly, two of those victories came against Green Eagles, making the Choma-based side one of the few teams Mines United consistently troubled this season.
Minor Setback for Green Eagles
For Green Eagles, the defeat represents only a minor disappointment in what has generally been a stable campaign.
The Eagles finish the season on 50 points and currently sit fifth on the table.
However, depending on other results involving ZANACO FC, Mufulira Wanderers, and FC MUZA, they could still drop as low as eighth position.
Despite the defeat, Green Eagles still produced a respectable overall season compared to several teams around them.
Conclusion
Mines United’s final-day victory over Green Eagles may not erase the disappointment of relegation, but it at least gave the club a positive moment to end a difficult season.
After months of struggles and a lengthy winless run, the Kabwe side finally gave their supporters something to celebrate once again.
For Green Eagles, attention will now turn towards regrouping and preparing for the new season after missing out on a stronger finish in the standings.
