Green Eagles Coach Mutapa Expects Tough Military Derby

Green Eagles Coach Mutapa Expects Tough Military Derby

Head coach Perry Mutapa says Green Eagles FC are preparing for a difficult encounter against FC Leopards in their Week 23 clash of the MTN Super League.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Mutapa described the match as a demanding contest and warned that Leopards remain a dangerous opponent despite their current position in the relegation zone.

“We are geared for the game. Yes, it’s a military derby. The last time we played them it was a game full of goals and we drew 2–2 at home, so this is going to be a different ball game,” Mutapa said.

“It’s a very dangerous team to play. Like you have said, they are in the relegation waters, so it’s not going to be easy. But for us, I think we have found that rhythm and we want to continue with that.”

Focus on Defensive Stability

While the Eagles have recently shown improvement in attack, Mutapa stressed that tightening up defensively will be key to securing another positive result.

“The most important thing we should do is close shop. In terms of scoring, recently we have done so well, so the most important thing now is to make sure we consolidate our defence,” he explained.

Green Eagles head into the match with growing confidence after a solid run of results that has seen them remain unbeaten in their last four games.

Sunzu Injury Blow

Mutapa also confirmed that experienced defender Bornface Sunzu will miss the match after picking up an injury during the closing moments of their previous encounter against Nchanga Rangers FC.

“From the Nchanga Rangers game, Sunzu got injured from the last kick of the match, so we are missing him. But we have found cover and that’s what a team should be made of,” Mutapa said.

“When someone is not okay or injured, we should find a replacement, which is good for the team.”

Call for Fan Support

Mutapa also appealed to supporters to rally behind the team as they aim to maintain their good run of form.

“Our fans are always there for us. They should come in numbers and support the team so that we can pick up maximum points,” he said.

The coach further expressed gratitude to the club’s sponsors, Zambia National Service and Xtenda, for their continued backing of the team.

“They are always there for us. They have made it possible for us to be in the position where we are and they should just continue supporting us.”

Form Guide and Head-to-Head

Green Eagles approach the fixture in strong form, unbeaten in their last four matches with three wins and one draw, and will be chasing a third consecutive victory.

Meanwhile, FC Leopards have struggled in recent weeks and are currently winless in their last three matches.

Historically, meetings between the two sides have been closely contested. In their previous nine encounters, FC Leopards have recorded three wins while Green Eagles have claimed four victories, with two matches ending in draws.
