Power Dynamos are through to the next round of the CAF Champions League, overcoming Asec Mimosas in dramatic fashion after a tense night in Abidjan. Despite falling 1-0 on the night, the Zambian champions held their nerve in a 5-4 penalty shootout victory to seal qualification.
The match was fiercely contested from the start, with Asec pushing hard to overturn their first-leg deficit. Their breakthrough came in the 53rd minute through Fofana, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. But instead of crumbling, Power Dynamos showed grit and resilience, maintaining their defensive shape under pressure.
Asec’s momentum was halted when Seydou Sacko received a red card in the 61st minute, reducing the Ivorian giants to ten men. Even though Dominic Chanda was later sent off for Power Dynamos with just three minutes left, the Kitwe side held on to force penalties.
In the shootout, goalkeeper Lawrence Mulenga emerged as the hero, pulling off a crucial save to send Power Dynamos into the next round. His composure between the sticks sparked wild celebrations among the traveling contingent.
With this hard-fought qualification secured, Power Dynamos now shift their focus to Ugandan side Vipers, who await them in the upcoming round. If tonight proved anything, it’s that Power aren’t just playing to participate — they’re here to fight.
