Nkana Place Chipepo, Katongo on Administrative Leave

Nkana FC have placed head coach Mwenya Chipepo and his first assistant Christopher Katongo on administrative leave following a run of three consecutive defeats in the MTN Super League.

The 13-time league champions currently sit 12th on the table with 25 points from 22 matches — a position that falls significantly below the club’s historical standards. In an official statement, Nkana clarified that the decision is procedural and not disciplinary in nature.

“Head Coach Mwenya Chipepo and First Assistant Coach Christopher Katongo have been placed on administrative leave with full pay and benefits, pending the conclusion of internal processes,” the club stated. Management added that the move is intended to allow internal matters to be addressed without disruption to operations.

Elijah Tana Takes Interim Charge

In response, Nkana have restructured their technical bench, appointing former Zambia men’s national football team captain Elijah Tana as Interim Head Coach.

He will be assisted by Josephat Nkhoma as First Assistant Coach and Donashano Malama as Second Assistant Coach, while Mike Poto retains his role as Goalkeeper Coach. The reshuffle extends beyond the senior squad, with Young Nkana Head Coach Simon Bwalya assuming additional duties as Senior Team Physical Trainer. Kelvin Chabala takes over leadership of Young Nkana.

Within the women’s structure, Laston Kangwa remains head coach of Nkana Girls, assisted by Esther Mulenga — ensuring continuity in that department.

Management Justifies Technical Restructure

Chief Executive Officer Mwansa Kapyanga defended the decision, stating that management deemed the intervention necessary to safeguard competitiveness.

“Management believes the changes are necessary at this time and are in the best interests of the club to ensure it remains competitive. The technical bench has been assured of full support,” Kapyanga said.

The language of the statement suggests a strategic reset rather than a definitive dismissal, as internal evaluations continue behind the scenes.

For Nkana, the immediate objective is performance stabilisation. The club’s stature in Zambian football demands upward mobility, not mid-table stagnation. With the season entering a decisive stretch, the interim leadership of Elijah Tana will be tasked with restoring confidence, consistency and results.

Further updates are expected as internal processes unfold — but the pressure to reverse Kalampa’s slide is immediate and undeniable.
