Meet the African Teams Heading to the FIFA World Cup

Africa’s lineup for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is officially complete, with nine nations set to represent the continent at the global showpiece in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. For the first time in history, Africa will have nine guaranteed slots, with the possibility of a tenth nation joining through the intercontinental playoffs, where one of Nigeria, Gabon, Cameroon, or DR Congo could still secure a place.

Below is a breakdown of the teams flying Africa’s flag in North America:

Egypt – The Pharaohs Return

Africa’s most decorated AFCON side will make their fourth World Cup appearance. After past appearances in 1934, 1990, and 2018, Egypt will look to finally translate continental dominance into global success.

Ghana – Black Stars Reloaded

Ghana return for their fifth appearance, having previously featured in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022. Their unforgettable 2010 quarterfinal run remains one of Africa’s biggest “what ifs” — and they’ll be aiming to finish the job this time.

Morocco – Africa’s Pride

After making history in 2022 by becoming the first African team to reach a World Cup semifinal, Morocco are back for their seventh appearance. With momentum and confidence, the Atlas Lions will be one of the continent’s biggest hopes.

Cabo Verde – Debutants with a Dream

One of the fairytale stories of African football — Cabo Verde will participate in the World Cup for the first time ever. Their structured system and rising talents make them a team to watch.

Tunisia – The Carthage Eagles Stay Consistent

Known for their tactical discipline, Tunisia head into their seventh World Cup appearance. They rarely go down without a fight.

Algeria – The Desert Foxes Are Back

Four-time participants and 2014 Round of 16 competitors, Algeria remain one of Africa’s most technically gifted teams. North American conditions could suit their style of play.

South Africa – Bafana Bafana Return After 15 Years

Their last appearance came as hosts in 2010, but now South Africa are back on merit. Qualification was celebrated nationwide — but expectations will be higher than ever.

Senegal – The Lions of Teranga Hunt Bigger Glory

With three previous appearances (2002, 2018, 2022), Senegal have a World Cup pedigree — including a legendary 2002 quarterfinal run. Their physicality and passion will make them tough contenders.

Ivory Coast – Champions of Africa Look to Conquer the World

Fresh off winning AFCON, the Elephants return for their fourth appearance. They boast one of the most talented squads on the continent — and ambition to match.

Africa will enter the 2026 FIFA World Cup with more representation than ever before, and with recent progress — especially from Morocco in 2022 — optimism is high. Will this be the year Africa finally reaches the final?
