Mathews Banda: National Team Call-Up a Motivation for Young Players

Chipolopolo defender Mathews Banda has described his latest national team call-up as a huge source of inspiration — not just for himself, but for other young Zambian players chasing their dreams. The promising defender, who once featured for Kafue Celtic, is part of Avram Grant’s Zambia squad currently in Zanzibar ahead of Wednesday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Tanzania.

Banda Inspired and Focused on Learning

Speaking ahead of the crucial Group E encounter, Banda said being included in the national setup is a major milestone in his career and a reminder that hard work and discipline do not go unnoticed. The defender emphasized the importance of staying grounded and learning from senior players both at club and national team level.

“I am happy to be called; it’s motivating for me as a young player,” Banda said. “Even my friends who are not here are also getting motivated to work hard and reach this level. As young players, we need to be disciplined and learn from the senior players we play with.”

Hope for the Next Generation

Banda believes his inclusion is a sign that young Zambian talents have a real chance of breaking into the Chipolopolo squad if they remain committed. He urged his peers to stay focused and consistent, adding that every call-up serves as a message of hope for the next generation of players coming through the ranks.

The youthful defender also acknowledged that the upcoming fixtures against Tanzania and Niger will not only shape Zambia’s World Cup campaign but also serve as a launchpad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations preparations.

“This will be the start of preparations for the Africa Cup. It starts from here,” he said. “To the fans, they just need to support us, and we will also do what they want.”

Group E Standings

After six games played, Zambia sits fourth with 6 points, having struggled to find consistency in the qualifying campaign. Morocco leads the group with a perfect 21 points, already sealing their ticket to the 2026 World Cup. Tanzania follows in second place with 10 points, while Niger are third with 9 points.

With two fixtures remaining, Zambia’s focus is now on finishing strongly and building momentum heading into the AFCON later this year in Morocco.
