Mangani Banda Earns National Team Call-Up for CHAN 2025
Kabwe Warriors goalkeeper Mangani Banda has been called up by coach Wedson Nyirenda (Wada Wada) for the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF CHAN 2025 tournament. Banda’s selection comes as no surprise to those who have followed his exceptional performances in the Zambian Premier League, where he has been a dependable force between the posts.
The 26-year-old shot-stopper is fondly remembered for his heroics during the 2017 U20 AFCON, where he clinched the Golden Glove Award for his outstanding performances that helped Zambia lift the trophy. Banda’s ability to deliver critical saves and his composure under pressure have made him a standout goalkeeper over the years.
Interestingly, Banda’s national team recall has sparked mixed reactions among Zambian football fans. Just two weeks ago, football analysts, suggested on social media that Banda deserved a spot in the national team. The post triggered a wave of skepticism, with many fans questioning whether the Kabwe Warriors goalkeeper was still in top form.
However, Banda has silenced his critics with consistent displays for his club, earning him the trust of coach Nyirenda. The CHAN tournament, reserved for players active in domestic leagues, will provide Banda with an opportunity to reaffirm his status as one of Zambia’s top goalkeepers.
Mangani Banda is expected to compete with other top goalkeepers like Lawrence Mulenga (Power Dynamos) and Charles Kalumba (Red Arrows) in the provisional squad. His experience, particularly on the continental stage, could prove invaluable as Zambia aims for CHAN success.
The national team is set to begin residential training this weekend in preparation for the tournament, scheduled to take place in February 2025. With Banda in their ranks, the Chipolopolo Boys are bolstering their squad with a mix of youth and experience.
Banda’s return to the national team signals a resurgence in his career. As fans eagerly await the CHAN tournament, many will look to see if he can replicate the brilliance that earned him accolades in 2017.
