Malawi Secures COSAFA Women’s Championship Victory, Dethroning Defending Champs Zambia
In a thrilling and fiercely contested final, Malawi’s women’s national team, the Scorchers, achieved a historic victory by defeating defending champions Zambia 2-1 at the COSAFA Women’s Championship in South Africa. The highly anticipated match showcased the incredible talent and determination of both teams.
Zambia, aiming to become only the second nation in the tournament’s history to successfully defend the title after South Africa, faced an assured Scorchers squad. Malawi had dominated the competition, winning every game en route to the final and scoring a total of 17 goals, with Temwa Chawinga netting 9 of them.
The match began with Malawi’s Chawinga narrowly missing the target in the sixth minute, launching the first shot on goal. Minutes later, Zambia’s Sarah Jere, another standout player of the tournament, had her close-range shot expertly saved by Malawi’s goalkeeper, Mercy Sikelo, offering Zambia its initial goal-scoring opportunity.

The battle on the field predominantly took place in the midfield, with both teams showcasing solid defenses, emphasizing their determination to claim the title.
In the 34th minute, Asimenye Simwaka of Malawi scored the opening goal, giving the 2021 finalists the lead. However, shortly after, the Scorchers believed they had doubled their lead with a goal from Sabinha Thom, but the video assistant referee disallowed it, keeping the score at 1-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Zambia’s assistant coach, Florence Mwila, introduced early substitutions in an effort to equalize. It wasn’t until the 84th minute that substitute Agness Phiri, who had come on for Fridah Kabwe, converted a penalty kick after Ireen Khumalo handled her shot, briefly raising Zambia’s hopes.
However, in the 90th minute, Sabinha Thom struck again for Malawi, seizing the lead for the second time. This crucial goal proved to be the decider, as the Scorchers secured their first-ever COSAFA Women’s Championship victory, dethroning the defending champions, Zambia. The match was a testament to the competitiveness and skill displayed throughout the tournament, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the next edition.
