Lubambo Musonda Targets Niger Clash as Key AFCON Preparation

Chipolopolo captain Lubambo Musonda says Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against Niger will serve as an important rehearsal for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled for December in Morocco.

Zambia head into the match high on confidence after edging Tanzania 1-0 in Zanzibar, where Lubambo provided the assist for Fashion Sakala’s winning goal.

“The spirits are high in camp after the win against Tanzania,” Lubambo said.
“There are a lot of positives in the team. It’s just a matter of working on the conditions, improving our combinations and understanding each other more.”

The skipper believes that the clash against Niger — who beat Zambia 2-1 in the reverse fixture — is more than just a qualifier.

“This match is not only about points. It’s good preparation for AFCON. We want to build momentum and keep improving,” he added.

Lubambo also issued a rallying call to the fans ahead of the decisive showdown at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

“We need the supporters. Let them come in numbers and push us. This is a big game for the country.”

Zambia sit on nine points, one behind Niger (12) and Tanzania (10), making Sunday’s fixture a must-win if they are to finish second and remain in contention for a potential CAF playoff slot.
