Chipolopolo winger Lubambo Musonda has suffered a ruptured left Achilles tendon, dealing a major blow to both FC Magdeburg and the Zambia national team ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The German club confirmed that Musonda sustained the serious injury during training and is set to undergo surgery before beginning an extensive rehabilitation programme.
Lengthy Spell on the Sidelines
A ruptured Achilles tendon is one of the most serious injuries a footballer can suffer, with recovery typically taking between six and 12 months.
The injury means Musonda is expected to miss a significant portion of the upcoming season and is now a major doubt for Zambia’s September AFCON qualifiers.
His absence would be a huge setback for Chipolopolo, given his experience and importance to the national team.
Big Blow for Zambia
Musonda has been one of Zambia’s most reliable wide players in recent years, bringing pace, creativity and versatility to the squad.
With the AFCON qualifying campaign set to begin in September, head coach Avram Grant could be forced to reshuffle his attacking options should the experienced winger fail to recover in time.
Focus Turns to Recovery
The immediate priority for the 31-year-old will be a successful operation and rehabilitation as he begins the long road back to competitive football.
Both FC Magdeburg and the Zambia football fraternity will be hoping to see Musonda make a full recovery and return stronger in the months ahead.
Conclusion
Lubambo Musonda’s injury is a significant setback for both club and country.
As the winger prepares for surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation, Zambia will anxiously await updates on his recovery ahead of the crucial 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
