Kelvin Kampamba Scores Emotional Tribute Goal For His Mother
In a touching and emotional moment for both player and nation, Zambian midfielder Kelvin Kampamba found the back of the net in Zambia’s 3-2 victory over Sierra Leone, just days after laying his mother to rest. The match, which took place on the Copperbelt, saw Kampamba come off the bench to score the opener, a poignant tribute to his late mother.
Kampamba was excused from the Chipolopolo squad for the recent away loss to Ivory Coast, where Zambia fell 2-0. Despite the personal tragedy, he showed remarkable strength by rejoining the national team shortly after the burial. Coming off the bench, his goal put Zambia in the lead, sparking an emotional celebration. Although Sierra Leone quickly equalized, Kampamba’s effort was a turning point for the Chipolopolo.
In an interesting twist, all three of Zambia’s goals came from players whose first names begin with the letter “K”—Kennedy Musonda, Kelvin Kampamba, and Kings Kangwa. This victory was particularly significant as it broke a six-match winless streak for Zambia and marked the first triumph for coach Avraham Grant in 2024.
With this crucial win, Zambia now has three points from two games in their AFCON qualifying campaign, moving from the bottom of the group to second place. Ivory Coast leads Group G with six points, having secured back-to-back wins, including a 2-0 victory over Chad. Zambia, Sierra Leone, and Chad are battling for the remaining qualification spot, with only two teams from the group advancing to the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
For Kelvin Kampamba, this goal will remain etched in memory—not just for its significance on the pitch, but for the personal emotion it carried. His tribute to his late mother, under the immense pressure of international football, will surely resonate with Zambian fans and his teammates for a long time.
