Zambia U17 Dominate Zimbabwe to Secure COSAFA U17 Semi-Final Spot
The Junior Chipolopolo delivered another stellar performance in the COSAFA U17 Cup, defeating Zimbabwe 5-1 in a thrilling Group B encounter. The victory, marked by a hat trick from star striker Abel Nyirongo, propelled Zambia into the semi-finals with an unassailable lead in the group.
Zambia began the match on the front foot, with Mapalo Simute opening the scoring in the 8th minute. The young Chipolopolo dominated possession, but Zimbabwe managed to equalize in the 31st minute through Valentine Macheka, briefly unsettling the Zambian rhythm.
Zambia’s defense, led by James Sibene, reorganized quickly, ensuring the game remained level at halftime.
The second half belonged to Abel Nyirongo, whose clinical finishing stole the show. Nyirongo scored three goals in quick succession, finding the net in the 79th, 85th, and 88th minutes to complete his hat trick. His relentless attacking play left Zimbabwe’s defense in disarray.
Substitute Nkotami Chimwemwe added the icing on the cake with a stunning 25-yard strike in the 90th minute, sealing Zambia’s emphatic victory.
This victory places Zambia firmly at the top of Group B with six points, following their impressive 8-0 win over Namibia earlier in the tournament. Zimbabwe, who defeated Eswatini in their opener, now faces a tougher path to the semi-finals.
Zambia will conclude their group stage campaign on Monday with a match against Eswatini, aiming to maintain their unbeaten record.
With back-to-back dominant displays, Ian Bakala’s team has emerged as strong contenders for the COSAFA U17 title. The Junior Chipolopolo are firing on all cylinders, and their attacking prowess will be a key asset as they advance to the knockout stages.
