Red Arrows Stun Kaizer Chiefs to Reach CAF Confederation Cup Group Stage

Red Arrows have qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup group stage for the first time in the club’s history after defeating South African giants Kaizer Chiefs 3-2 on penalties at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Thursday night.

The Airmen held their nerve in a dramatic shootout after losing the second leg 1-0, with Bradley Cross scoring for Kaizer Chiefs to level the tie at 1-1 on aggregate. However, Red Arrows showed composure when it mattered most, converting their opportunities in the penalty shootout to secure a historic qualification.

Goalkeeper Charles Kalumba was the standout performer for the Zambian side, producing crucial saves during the match before saving a penalty in the shootout to help send Red Arrows through to the next stage of the competition.

Kalumba’s most important intervention during normal time came in the 83rd minute, when he denied a Kaizer Chiefs player in a one-on-one situation. The save proved vital, keeping the Airmen in contention and ensuring the tie went to penalties.

The goalkeeper’s decisive contribution under pressure helped Red Arrows overcome one of South Africa’s most recognisable clubs on their own turf, delivering a landmark result for the Zambian outfit.

Despite the challenging atmosphere in Durban, Red Arrows also showed attacking intent in the first half, with Ackim Mumba, Eliya Mandanji and Zephaniah Phiri among the players who threatened the hosts.

Although Kaizer Chiefs claimed victory in the second leg, their 1-0 win was not enough to secure qualification, as Red Arrows prevailed 3-2 in the shootout after the teams finished level at 1-1 on aggregate.

The achievement marks a significant milestone for Red Arrows and Zambian club football, coming on the eve of the country’s Independence Day celebrations. The Airmen can now look forward to their first-ever appearance in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage after navigating a difficult two-legged tie against the South African giants.

For Red Arrows, qualification represents a historic night built on resilience, goalkeeping heroics and composure under pressure as the club prepares to take its place among the competition’s group-stage participants.
