Ian Bakala Set for Return to Zimbabwe as CAPS United Eye New Head Coach
Former Zambia U17 coach Ian Bakala is reportedly on the brink of being appointed as head coach of Zimbabwean giants CAPS United. According to emerging reports, the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League outfit has already held talks with the former Chipolopolo midfielder, who left his post at Forest Rangers earlier this year.
Bakala, a well-respected name in Southern African football circles, is no stranger to Zimbabwean football. In fact, he donned the CAPS United jersey in 2004, spending a season with the Harare-based club before continuing his professional journey across the region. That past connection may now play a key role in his return — this time, on the touchline.
CAPS United in Crisis, Seek Tactical Uplift
CAPS United are currently enduring a difficult start to the 2025 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season. A series of underwhelming performances have left the Green Machine languishing in the lower half of the table, prompting the club to urgently seek new technical leadership. Bakala, who also previously managed Lusaka Dynamos and Nkana FC, has now emerged as a front-runner to steady the ship.
A club insider revealed, “We have spoken to Ian Bakala, and he is very much interested in the opportunity. His knowledge of Zimbabwean football and his recent experience with youth development in Zambia are big advantages.”
From Forest Rangers to CAPS United?
After parting ways with Forest Rangers in the MTN Super League, Bakala has been open to new opportunities. His short stint with the Zambia U17 national team was widely praised for its emphasis on tactical structure and player development. He is known for instilling discipline and organizing competitive, energetic squads — traits that CAPS United are sorely lacking at the moment.
His potential appointment has already stirred excitement among the Makepekepe faithful, many of whom remember his on-field contributions from his 2004 campaign.
A Full Circle Moment for Bakala
A return to CAPS United would mark a significant “full circle” moment for the Zambian tactician. From midfield general to potential head coach, Bakala’s evolution in football has seen him transition from player to manager while maintaining deep regional connections. His ability to blend experience with youth development could be exactly what CAPS United need to turn their season around.
Should the deal be finalized, Bakala would become one of a few Zambian coaches to manage in the Zimbabwean Premier League — a testament to his growing reputation across the continent.
What’s Next?
With negotiations reportedly at an advanced stage, an official announcement could be made in the coming days. For CAPS United, the hope is that Ian Bakala can bring tactical clarity and rekindle the club’s competitive spark. For Bakala, it’s a chance to write a new chapter in familiar territory — this time, from the dugout.
