Hellen Chanda: We Must Make Amends at WAFCON 2026

Hellen Chanda Eyes WAFCON Success and World Cup Qualification

Copper Queens midfielder Hellen Chanda says Zambia is determined to make amends for its disappointing performance at the previous Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as the team prepares for the 2026 edition in Morocco.

The Eastern Flames midfielder believes the tournament presents another opportunity for the Copper Queens to prove themselves on the continental stage while pursuing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Zambia has been drawn in a challenging Group C alongside record champions Nigeria, Egypt and regional rivals Malawi.

Focused on Redemption

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Chanda expressed her excitement at returning to the national team and praised the intensity and commitment being shown by the players during preparations.

“I’m very happy to be back after a long time. The preparation is going so well; everyone is putting in their best, everyone is pushing. Of course, we know it’s a big tournament, so we want the best from us,” Chanda said.

She admitted that the Copper Queens were not satisfied with their previous WAFCON campaign and believes the current squad is determined to put things right.

“I think the chance has come to us again, so it’s our time to prove ourselves and do our best. Especially the last couple of days, we didn’t do our best, but this time we just have to.”

Healthy Competition in Camp

Chanda also highlighted the fierce competition within the provisional squad, saying every player is working hard to secure a place in Nora Häuptle’s final team for Morocco.

She believes the high level of competition is pushing the players to improve every day.

The midfielder added that the squad is united in its ambition to achieve success for Zambia.

Algeria Camp Ahead

The Copper Queens will continue preparations in Lusaka before travelling to Algeria on 12 July for an international training camp.

While in Algeria, Zambia will play two international friendly matches against the hosts on 19 July and 22 July as part of their final preparations for WAFCON.

The Copper Queens will begin their Group C campaign against Egypt before taking on defending champions Nigeria and concluding the group stage against Malawi.

The top four teams at WAFCON will qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Fans Urged to Keep Supporting the Team

Chanda concluded by thanking supporters for their continued encouragement and urged them to remain behind the team throughout the tournament.

“We say thank you for your support. Continue supporting us.”

Conclusion

With preparations gathering momentum, the Copper Queens are fully focused on making a strong impression at WAFCON 2026.
