Winfridah Mutale Embraces Copper Queens Opportunity

14-Year-Old Winfridah Mutale Embraces Copper Queens Opportunity

Fourteen-year-old goalkeeper Winfridah Mutale has urged young footballers across Zambia to believe in their dreams after earning another call-up to the Copper Queens squad preparing for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Elite Ladies shot-stopper admitted that her selection came as a surprise but said it has motivated her to work even harder as she competes alongside some of the country’s most experienced players.

Mutale is the youngest player in the provisional squad currently preparing for WAFCON and continues to impress after her outstanding performances for Zambia’s Under-15 Schools National Team.

A Dream Opportunity

Speaking to FAZ Media, Mutale described the experience of training with the senior national team as exciting and said the warm reception from the senior players has helped her settle quickly.

“I am excited looking at how the team welcomed us. The senior players are kind and very social with us young players.”

Despite her age, the talented goalkeeper says she is ready to compete for her place and learn from every training session.

Believing in Her Potential

Mutale revealed that she never expected to receive a senior national team call-up but is determined to make the most of the opportunity.

She encouraged other young footballers to remain patient, continue working hard and believe that their chance will come.

“The competition is high looking at the tournament. I was not expecting to be called. I am learning every day and I will keep working hard.”

“To other young players, they should keep believing in time and chance.”

The promising goalkeeper first received a senior national team call-up during the Four Nations Tournament held in June.

WAFCON Preparations Continue

The Copper Queens have begun preparations in Lusaka before travelling to Algeria for a pre-tournament training camp.

While in Algeria, Zambia will play two international friendly matches as part of the team’s final preparations before heading to Morocco for WAFCON.

The Copper Queens will open their Group C campaign on 28 July, before facing defending champions Nigeria four days later.

Their final group fixture will be against Malawi’s Scorchers on 5 August, with the top two teams progressing to the quarter-finals.

The top four teams at the tournament will secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Conclusion

At just 14 years old, Winfridah Mutale is already living a dream many young footballers aspire to achieve.

Her rapid rise from the Zambia Under-15 Schools National Team to the Copper Queens is a reminder that talent, hard work and belief can open doors, regardless of age.
