Hazel Nali Back in Zambia Squad for 2026 WAFCON Qualifiers

Hazel Nali Back in Zambia Squad for 2026 WAFCON Qualifiers

The Copper Queens have received a major boost with the return of star goalkeeper Hazel Nali, who has been named in coach Nora Häuptle’s 42-member provisional squad for the upcoming Morocco 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers against Namibia. Nali’s recall comes after recovering from a long-term ACL injury that kept her out of action since 2023.

Nali’s Inspirational Comeback

Nali’s inclusion marks a significant moment for the Copper Queens. The 26-year-old goalkeeper impressed on her return to competitive football, guiding Zesco Ndola Girls to the COSAFA Women’s Champions League final in their debut appearance. Her comeback strengthens Zambia’s defensive setup ahead of the crucial back-to-back fixtures against Namibia.

The goalkeeper’s experience on the international stage, including appearances at the Olympics and WAFCON 2022, will be vital for Zambia, especially in the absence of captain Barbra Banda, who has been ruled out for the season with a hip abductor injury.

New Faces and Key Absentees

Alongside Nali, Agness Fabiola Banda of Nchanga Queens has been drafted into the squad, while Natasha Witika of Konkola Blades Queens earns her first senior national team call-up. These fresh inclusions underline Häuptle’s strategy of blending seasoned campaigners with emerging talent.

However, the absence of Barbra Banda leaves a major gap in attack. The Copper Queens will need to rely on the likes of Mary Mbewe, Eneles Phiri, and Avell Chitundu to step up in the forward line.

Preparation and Fixtures

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) confirmed that foreign-based players will link up with the squad once the FIFA window opens on October 20. This will allow Häuptle to fine-tune her tactics with a full-strength team ahead of the first leg.

Zambia will face Namibia on October 22 at Dobsonville Stadium in South Africa before hosting the decisive second leg at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola. The aggregate winner will qualify for the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco, which also serves as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
