Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi has expressed delight after making a faster-than-expected return from injury, marking his comeback in the Atlas Lions’ AFCON clash against Zambia. The Paris Saint-Germain defender returned to action on Monday and immediately set the tone, reaffirming Morocco’s clear ambition at the tournament.
Earlier-Than-Expected Return
Hakimi admitted he did not anticipate recovering in time to feature so soon at the Africa Cup of Nations.
“I didn’t expect to recover this early,” Hakimi said.
“It feels great to be back from injury and I’m really excited to be part of AFCON again.”
His return comes as a major boost for Morocco as the tournament enters its decisive stages.
Praise for Teammates
The 2025 African Footballer of the Year was quick to credit his teammates for maintaining high standards during his absence. Hakimi highlighted the depth and unity within the squad, stressing that Morocco’s performances without him underlined their collective strength.
“Morocco has been playing very well without me, and that shows the strength of this group. I’m now here to help make the team even stronger.”
Morocco have impressed with their balance, intensity, and tactical discipline, qualities that have positioned them among the tournament favourites.
Clear AFCON Ambition
Hakimi left no room for ambiguity when asked about Morocco’s target at AFCON. The captain was emphatic about the team’s mindset as they push for continental success.
“We have one objective and one objective only — to win AFCON.”
The statement reflects the confidence and belief within the Moroccan camp as they continue their pursuit of African glory.
Conclusion
Achraf Hakimi’s return from injury not only strengthens Morocco on the pitch but also reinforces their title credentials. With leadership, depth, and ambition clearly evident, the Atlas Lions remain firmly focused on lifting the AFCON trophy.
