Haaland Scores Brace on World Cup Debut as Norway Thrash Iraq

Erling Haaland enjoyed a dream FIFA World Cup debut by scoring twice as Norway cruised to a convincing 4-1 victory over Iraq in their opening Group I fixture at Boston Stadium.

The Manchester City striker once again demonstrated his ability to deliver on the biggest stage, helping Norway mark their first World Cup appearance since 1998 with an emphatic victory that sent them to the top of the group.

The result came just hours after France defeated Senegal 3-1, setting up an intriguing battle at the summit of Group I.

Haaland Strikes Twice

Norway broke the deadlock after 29 minutes when Haaland arrived at the far post to convert a low cross from David Møller Wolfe.

Iraq responded positively and found an equaliser ten minutes later through Aymen Hussein, who powered home a header from Amir Al-Ammari’s delivery to make it 1-1.

However, the parity did not last long.

Just before halftime, Haaland capitalised on a defensive mistake, intercepting a loose backpass before applying the finishing touch as the ball trickled over the goal line to restore Norway’s lead.

Norway Pull Away

The second half belonged entirely to the Vikings.

Leo Østigård extended Norway’s advantage with a well-taken header before Iraq’s Aymen Hussein endured a difficult ending to the match by turning the ball into his own net.

The fourth goal sealed an impressive performance from the Scandinavians, who looked sharp, organised and clinical throughout.

Haaland Downplays World’s Best Debate

Despite grabbing the headlines once again, Haaland refused to describe himself as the world’s best striker after the match.

The Norwegian pointed to the goalscoring records of Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé during the season.

“In terms of goalscoring, I am up there. But I don’t think I scored the most goals this season.”

“Statistically, no, I am not. I think Harry Kane and Mbappe scored more goals than me.”

The brace continued a remarkable trend in Haaland’s career, having previously scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Champions League debut for RB Salzburg, a treble on his Bundesliga debut for Borussia Dortmund and a brace on his Premier League debut for Manchester City.

Iraq Reflect on Defeat

Iraq defender Merchas Doski admitted his side competed well for large periods but paid heavily for mistakes.

“For 60 minutes we played very well but then we made too many mistakes and Norway made the most of them. It was a deserved win for them.”

The defeat leaves Iraq facing a difficult road ahead in Group I.

What Next?

Norway’s impressive victory moves them to the top of Group I on goal difference ahead of France.

The Scandinavians now face another stern examination against Senegal on June 23 at MetLife Stadium.

Meanwhile, Iraq must regroup quickly before taking on Kylian Mbappé and France in what promises to be a daunting challenge.
