Zambian utility player Gamphani Lungu continued his impressive start to the season by getting on the scoresheet as Orlando Pirates defeated Sekhukhune United 3-0 to book their place in the MTN8 final.
Lungu struck six minutes before half-time to double Pirates’ advantage and help the Buccaneers complete a 4-0 aggregate victory, following their 1-0 win in the first leg. The goal was Lungu’s third in all competitions this season, further highlighting his growing influence in an Orlando Pirates side enjoying another strong run in South Africa’s traditional season-opening cup competition.
Pirates had to work hard to find the breakthrough, but Thapelo Mokobodi eventually opened the scoring in the 36th minute after Yanela Mbuthuma’s pace created the opportunity. Lungu then doubled the advantage before the interval, with Mbuthuma collecting a pass from Oswin Appollis before finding the Zambian, who kept his composure to fire past the Sekhukhune defence.
Lungu continued to threaten after the restart and forced a save from a tight angle as Pirates looked to put the tie beyond doubt. Sekhukhune pushed forward in search of a response and tested the home defence, but the Buccaneers remained firm before Kamogelo Sebelebele added a third in the closing stages.
The victory sends Orlando Pirates into the MTN8 final for a record fifth consecutive time, extending their remarkable run in the competition. They will face either Mamelodi Sundowns or Lamontville Golden Arrows in the final, with the second semi-final to be decided on Sunday.
For Lungu, the latest goal provides further momentum following his impressive start to the campaign. With three goals already in all competitions, the Zambian will be hoping to maintain his form as Pirates chase another piece of silverware.
