Zambian international Gamphani Lungu has completed a high-profile move to South African Betway Premiership champions Orlando Pirates from Siwelele FC, with the Buccaneers confirming the midfielder’s arrival ahead of the new season.
Lungu joins one of Africa’s biggest clubs after an impressive spell in South African football, where he established himself as one of the league’s most consistent performers.
Pirates Continue Squad Rebuild
Orlando Pirates announced the signing of Lungu alongside fellow Siwelele FC midfielder Bohale Ngwato, while Mthetheleli Mthiyane joins from Stellenbosch FC and Sbangani Zulu arrives from Richards Bay FC.
In a statement, the club said:
“Recently crowned Betway Premiership champions Orlando Pirates are delighted to announce new arrivals to the club.”
The club also confirmed that defender Thabiso Lebitso will move to Stellenbosch FC as part of a deal involving Mthiyane.
A Reward for Years of Consistency
Lungu’s move comes after years of impressive performances in South Africa.
The 27-year-old joined SuperSport United from Power Dynamos in August 2018 and quickly became a key figure for the club. He remained with the side following its rebranding to Siwelele FC ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Since arriving in South Africa, Lungu has accumulated an impressive 212 appearances across all competitions, scoring 29 goals and contributing 25 assists.
His versatility, work rate and ability to influence matches from midfield have made him one of Zambia’s most reliable exports abroad.
A New Challenge Awaits
The move presents Lungu with an opportunity to compete for major domestic honours and CAF titles with one of the continent’s most successful clubs.
Pirates are also preparing for a busy campaign and have begun reshaping their squad, with Bandile Shandu, Sipho Mbule, Tshegofatso Mabasa, Karim Kimvuidi and Deivi Miguel Vieira all departing after the expiration of their contracts.
The Buccaneers thanked the departing players for their contributions while welcoming a new generation of talent to the club.
Conclusion
Gamphani Lungu’s transfer to Orlando Pirates represents another major milestone in his career and highlights the continued rise of Zambian players on the African football stage.
With his experience, quality and consistency, the Chipolopolo midfielder will be hoping to make an immediate impact as Pirates look to defend their domestic crown and challenge for continental success
