Copper Queens Prepare for Crucial Friendlies Ahead of WAFCON

Zambia to Face South Africa and Botswana in Build-Up to Morocco 2024

The Copper Queens have intensified their preparations ahead of two high-profile international friendly matches scheduled to take place in South Africa. These friendlies form a critical part of Zambia’s build-up to the upcoming 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Bruce Mwape’s side is scheduled to take on reigning African champions South Africa on May 31st, before facing Botswana on June 3rd, with both games offering valuable tactical and mental preparation for the tournament. The Copper Queens are placed in Group A, where they will square off against host nation Morocco, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo in what promises to be a tightly contested group stage.

Team Morale High as Training Intensifies

Midfielder Maweta Chilenga spoke confidently after a recent training session, revealing that morale in camp is very high.

“The atmosphere is fantastic, and everyone is working hard. These friendlies will help sharpen our readiness. Competition is stiff, but we are learning a lot from the experienced players,” said Chilenga.

Defender Esther Siamfuko echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of the friendlies in preparing the squad tactically and mentally for the continental challenge.

“This is a huge opportunity for us to gain more international experience. We are focused and determined to implement the coaches’ tactical instructions,” Siamfuko said. “I urge the younger players to rise to the occasion and prove they deserve their place.”

Motivated by U-17 Girls’ Success

Midfielder Natasha Nanyangwe noted that the positive energy in training sessions has been influenced by the recent achievements of the Zambia U-17 girls’ national team, who recently qualified for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

“The U-17 girls have inspired us. Their success has reignited our own motivation to make Zambia proud. Everyone is putting in maximum effort,” she remarked.

Ready for a New Chapter at WAFCON

With Zambia aiming to improve on their last WAFCON campaign, the upcoming friendlies will serve as a crucial yardstick in determining the team’s readiness. The Copper Queens have gained a reputation for resilience, having featured in back-to-back Olympic Games and reaching the WAFCON semi-finals in 2022.
