Copper Queens Learns New WAFCON 2026 Dates

Copper Queens Learns New WAFCON 2026 Dates After CAF Reschedule

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially rescheduled the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), pushing the tournament to new dates between July 25 and August 16, 2026.

The continental governing body had originally scheduled the competition to take place from March 17 to April 3, 2026. However, following consultations with key stakeholders including FIFA, CAF confirmed the adjustment to ensure optimal conditions for the tournament’s organization and overall success.

In a statement released on the CAF website, the body explained that the decision followed discussions with partners and other involved parties.

“In October 2024, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) awarded Morocco the organisation of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026, initially scheduled for 17 March to 3 April 2026.”

CAF further clarified that the change was influenced by unforeseen circumstances, prompting a shift in the calendar.

“After discussions between CAF and its partners, FIFA and other stakeholders, CAF has decided to reschedule the dates of the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON 2026 from 25 July to 16 August 2026, in order to ensure the success of this important women’s competition.”

Morocco Remains Host

The tournament will still be hosted by Morocco, which was awarded the rights to stage the competition in October 2024. Preparations for the event are reportedly progressing smoothly, with CAF expressing confidence that the tournament will meet expectations.

Zambia Drawn in Tough Group

The Zambia Women’s National Football Team has been placed in Group C, where they will face defending champions Nigeria Women’s National Football Team, alongside regional rivals Malawi Women’s National Football Team and Egypt Women’s National Football Team.

This group is expected to produce intense competition, particularly with Nigeria entering the tournament as reigning champions and Zambia aiming to build on their recent strong performances in African women’s football.

World Cup Qualification at Stake

The 2026 edition of WAFCON will carry added significance as it will serve as part of the qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The top four teams at the tournament will automatically secure their places at the global showpiece.

With the revised dates now confirmed, participating nations—including Zambia—will adjust their preparation plans ahead of what promises to be a highly competitive continental tournament.
