The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has appointed experienced coach George Lwandamina as the interim head coach of the Zambia national football team.
The decision follows changes made to the national team technical bench after the conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Morocco. FAZ confirmed that Lwandamina will immediately take charge of the team and will lead Chipolopolo into their next international assignment.
FAZ Reshuffles Chipolopolo Technical Bench
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, FAZ Acting Deputy General Secretary Iva Lengwe explained that the move is part of broader efforts to improve efficiency within the national team setup.
Lwandamina will take over the head coach role on an interim basis following FAZ’s decision to relieve Moses Sichone of his duties after the AFCON tournament.
According to Lengwe, only the positions of head coach and first assistant have been affected by the latest changes, while the rest of the technical bench remains unchanged.
Oswald Mutapa Jr Joins as Assistant Coach
Lwandamina will be assisted by Oswald Mutapa Jr, who currently serves as head coach of Power Dynamos.
Meanwhile, FAZ has also relieved Perry Mutapa of his assistant coaching role after being part of the AFCON technical bench.
The restructuring is aimed at giving the national team a fresh approach as it prepares for upcoming international competitions.
Lwandamina Returns to Familiar Territory
This will not be the first time Lwandamina is taking charge of the Chipolopolo. The veteran coach previously served as Zambia’s national team head coach between 2015 and 2016 before making way for Wedson Nyirenda.
Currently, Lwandamina is the head coach of Nchanga Rangers in the MTN Super League.
His appointment brings experience and familiarity with both local and international players, which FAZ believes will be crucial in stabilising the team.
Immediate Focus: Four-Nation Tournament
Lwandamina’s first assignment will be leading Zambia at the upcoming Four-Nation Tournament scheduled to take place in Francistown, Botswana from March 23 to 31, 2026.
With limited preparation time before the competition begins, the newly assembled technical bench has been tasked with selecting a competitive squad that will include both local-based players and foreign professionals.
The tournament will provide an opportunity for the Chipolopolo to regroup and build momentum following their AFCON campaign.
The return of Lwandamina to the Chipolopolo technical bench represents a significant moment for Zambian football as FAZ looks to steady the national team and prepare for future challenges.
With a crucial tournament just weeks away, all eyes will be on the veteran coach and his new technical team to see how quickly they can organise the squad and deliver positive results.
