The Zambia Women’s National Team has officially commenced preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a local training camp in Lusaka.
A total of 29 players have reported for camp as head coach Nora Häuptle begins laying the foundation for Zambia’s campaign at Africa’s biggest women’s football tournament.
The Copper Queens are aiming to build on their recent continental success and secure one of the four qualification spots for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Local Camp Underway
The team’s preparations have started with locally based players, while several foreign-based stars are yet to join camp due to ongoing club commitments in their respective leagues.
The overseas contingent is expected to link up with the squad during the final phase of preparations ahead of the tournament.
Training sessions are currently taking place at the University of Lusaka Silverest Campus, where the players have begun intensive work on fitness, tactical drills and team cohesion.
Algeria Camp Next
Following the conclusion of the local camp, the Copper Queens will travel to Algeria on 13 July for an international training camp.
During their stay, Zambia will play two international friendly matches against Algeria as part of the team’s final preparations before travelling to Morocco.
The friendlies are expected to provide valuable match fitness and allow the technical bench to fine-tune the squad ahead of the tournament.
Eyes on Morocco
The Copper Queens head into WAFCON with high ambitions after establishing themselves as one of Africa’s leading women’s national teams in recent years.
With a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup also at stake, Zambia will be looking to carry their impressive momentum onto the continental stage.
The tournament promises another major opportunity for the Copper Queens to showcase their quality against Africa’s best.
Conclusion
Preparations for WAFCON 2026 are now officially underway as the Copper Queens begin their journey towards another historic campaign.
With a blend of experienced internationals and emerging local talent in camp, Zambia will be hoping to arrive in Morocco fully prepared to compete for continental honours and another FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification.
