Avram Grant Explains Key Omissions in Chipolopolo’s Provisional Squad for World Cup Qualifiers

Zambia’s national football team, Chipolopolo, is gearing up for their crucial back-to-back World Cup qualifiers against Morocco and Tanzania. However, the squad selection has raised eyebrows with the notable absence of Tanzania-based midfielder Clatous Chota Chama and Saudi Arabia-based forward Fashion Sakala. During a press conference at Football House on Monday afternoon, head coach Avram Grant shed light on these significant omissions and provided updates on the team’s preparations.

Grant expressed his regret over not having Simba SC midfielder Chama in the squad. “It’s unfortunate that we will not have Clatous Chota Chama available as he just started training after sustaining an injury,” he said. Chama’s performance in previous matches, particularly in the tournament in Malawi where he was even nominated as captain for one of the games, has been instrumental for the team. His absence will undoubtedly be felt in the upcoming qualifiers.

The coach also confirmed the omission of Red Arrows captain Benedict Chepeshi due to injury. “Benedict Chepeshi is out with an injury, which is why he is not included in the squad,” Grant explained. Chepeshi’s leadership and defensive capabilities have been pivotal for Red Arrows and his absence creates a gap in the defensive line.

Despite these setbacks, Grant remains optimistic about the team’s prospects. “The squad is not final; we will fly to Morocco with 23 players. We hope for a good game,” he stated. The provisional 27-member squad, announced earlier this week, will enter camp to commence intensive preparations for the critical matches ahead.

Zambia currently sits second in Group E, following a thrilling 4-2 victory over Congo Brazzaville on Match Day one and a narrow 2-1 defeat to Niger on Match Day 2. The top team from each group will secure an automatic spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026, while the four best runners-up will compete in a CAF Play-Off tournament. The winner of this tournament will advance to the FIFA Play-off Tournament, offering another potential route to World Cup qualification.

Grant emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and utilizing the available talent to its fullest. “We have a strong team and we are focused on the upcoming games. Despite the injuries, we have players who are capable of stepping up and delivering strong performances,” he said. The coach’s strategic approach and ability to adapt to player availability will be crucial as Zambia aims to secure a place in the World Cup.

The Chipolopolo squad faces a challenging path ahead with key players missing, but under Avram Grant’s guidance, they are preparing rigorously to tackle their World Cup qualifying matches. Fans and supporters will be eagerly watching as the team strives to overcome these hurdles and achieve their World Cup dreams. Stay tuned for further updates as Zambia gears up for these pivotal encounters.
