Morocco, Paraguay and Brazil have secured their places in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following three dramatic knockout encounters that produced late goals, penalty shootouts and unforgettable moments.
The Atlas Lions once again relied on goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to eliminate the Netherlands, Paraguay stunned four-time world champions Germany on penalties, while Brazil needed a stoppage-time winner from Gabriel Martinelli to avoid a shock defeat against Japan.
The victories set up intriguing Round of 16 clashes as the race for the world title intensifies.
Brazil Leave It Late Against Japan
Brazil survived a major scare before defeating Japan 2-1 thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Gabriel Martinelli.
The Samurai Blue shocked the five-time world champions midway through the first half when Kaishu Sano won possession in midfield before driving forward and drilling a low finish into the bottom corner.
Brazil responded through experienced midfielder Casemiro, whose powerful header restored parity after sustained pressure.
Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced several outstanding saves to frustrate Brazil and looked set to force extra time.
However, deep into stoppage time, Bruno Guimarães delivered a perfectly weighted pass that released Martinelli, who calmly slotted past Suzuki to send Brazil into the next round.
The Seleção will now face Norway in a mouth-watering Round of 16 showdown.
Paraguay Eliminate Germany
Paraguay produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament by defeating Germany 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Julio Enciso gave the South Americans the lead with a superb header before Kai Havertz equalised for Germany with an excellent first-time finish.
Germany thought they had completed the comeback through Jonathan Tah, but his goal was ruled out, sending the contest into extra time.
With neither side able to find a winner, penalties were required.
Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill emerged as the hero after making two crucial saves, while José Canale converted the decisive penalty to knock out the four-time world champions.
It was Germany’s first-ever defeat in a FIFA World Cup penalty shootout.
Paraguay will now face either France or Sweden in the Round of 16.
Bounou Sends Morocco Through
Morocco continued Africa’s outstanding World Cup campaign by defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
The Dutch appeared destined for victory after Cody Gakpo handed them the lead.
However, the Atlas Lions refused to surrender and found a dramatic equaliser deep into stoppage time through Issa Diop, whose powerful header forced extra time.
Neither side could find the decisive goal during the additional 30 minutes, taking the match to penalties.
Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou once again proved Morocco’s hero, saving two spot-kicks to guide the Atlas Lions into the Round of 16 despite Bart Verbruggen also making a save for the Netherlands.
Morocco’s reward is a meeting with Canada as they continue their bid to make more World Cup history.
Knockout Stage Delivers More Drama
The latest Round of 32 fixtures once again demonstrated why the FIFA World Cup remains football’s greatest spectacle.
Late winners, heroic goalkeeping performances and nerve-wracking penalty shootouts decided three fiercely contested matches, with Morocco, Paraguay and Brazil all keeping their dreams of lifting the trophy alive.
Conclusion
The knockout stage continues to produce unforgettable moments, with Morocco’s resilience, Paraguay’s historic upset and Brazil’s late escape ensuring three more memorable stories at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
As the competition enters the Round of 16, every remaining nation now stands just a few victories away from football’s greatest prize.
